Alabama's first camp test is the line, not the quarterback race

The first practice made offensive-line continuity a more useful early test than the louder quarterback competition.

TODAY'S SIGNAL

The quarterback competition drew the attention, but the first practice produced a more useful question up front. Kalen DeBoer said the offensive line looked better and cleaner, while right tackle was taking shape as a competition between transfers Jayvin James and Nick Brooks.

One practice did not mean the problem was fixed. It clarified the test: if the same five began stacking first-team work—especially at right tackle—the quarterback winner would inherit a more workable offense.

WHAT TO WATCH

Whether the right-tackle competition narrows and whether the same five linemen begin taking the lead reps.
