The quarterback race is over. Alabama's next test is turning clarity into a settled offense

Keelon Russell winning the starting job resolves camp's biggest question and shifts attention to how quickly Alabama can build a clean first-team operation around him.

TODAY'S SIGNAL

ESPN's Pete Thamel, BamaOnLine and Yea Alabama reported Saturday that sophomore Keelon Russell won the starting job over Austin Mack and is expected to open against East Carolina on Sept. 5.

That resolves camp's biggest question. It also changes the useful watch. Russell's official Alabama bio shows only two backup appearances and 15 college pass attempts, so the next two weeks are less about quarterback speculation and more about how quickly Alabama can build a clean first-team operation around him.

Why it matters: naming the starter now gives the offense time to concentrate reps and roles before the opener. The decision does not prove Russell is ready for an SEC schedule.
