Kentucky preparation turns Alabama’s road question into a communication test

TODAY'S SIGNAL

Alabama’s first SEC road game now has a staff-defined preparation plan: Ryan Grubb said practices will be loud, disruptive and chaotic to force communication before the trip to Kentucky. Kalen DeBoer said communication becomes more difficult on the road and must also include “the guys on the outside” at times.

The opener left a concrete baseline. Alabama had three pre-snap penalties, including two delays of game, and used several timeouts as the play clock ran down. New center Racin Delgatty made late calls and corrections that Grubb said mattered, while the coordinator also said consistent communication still needs to improve.

The useful Saturday test is therefore narrower than whether the offense scores: can a new center, a new quarterback and an entirely reworked line stay aligned before the snap when the environment is louder? These comments define the work Alabama says it is doing; they do not establish that the work will translate on the road.

WHAT TO WATCH

Pre-snap penalties, delay-of-game problems and late timeouts in the first road environment. Whether Delgatty’s line calls and the offense’s consistent communication hold up under crowd noise. Whether the new quarterback and reworked line stay aligned before the snap without treating the final score as the only measure.
