Russell gave Alabama the clean game it needed from him

At Kentucky, Keelon Russell threw two interceptions. Against South Carolina, he supplied the clean answer Alabama needed: Russell completed 21 of 27 passes for 365 yards and four touchdowns without an interception in a 49–18 win.

The shape of the performance matters as much as the total. Alabama produced four first-half touchdown drives of at least 70 yards, and Russell's scoring passes went to three receivers. He was not merely avoiding risk; he was creating explosive plays while protecting the ball.

One clean home game does not close the question. South Carolina still sacked Russell twice, Alabama ran for 124 yards, and the Tide's three third-quarter possessions ended in punts. But after two interceptions at Kentucky, Russell has now shown the version Alabama needs: productive without making the offense recover from his mistakes.

What to Watch

Whether Russell carries the same ball security and downfield efficiency into Saturday's 11 a.m. road game at No. 16 Mississippi State; and whether the run game can keep the offense out of long-yardage situations when the explosive throws are not there.
